Sustainability commitment

Efficiently produced packaging made from fewer and wood-based raw materials supports the circular economy and regenerative forestry principles.

A resource- and energy-efficient novel technology process, along with recyclable and biodegradable Muoto™ end-products, helps the elimination of fossil-based CO2 emissions.

  • Resources

Muoto™ products are made of locally sourced pulp coming from traceable Nordic forests, mainly certified, and always from a known, legal origin.

As a packaging initiative by Metsä
Spring, Muoto™ aims to use 100% fossil-free raw and packaging materials by 2030
    (current 2023: 99.3%).

  • Raw materials

The pulp from the Äänekoski bioproduct mill has fossil CO2-eq emissions per tonne, approx. 30% lower than the average European pulp mill. All chemicals and additives are assessed for suitability
for food contact and compliance with the relevant regulations and recommendations.

  • Production

The Muoto™ demo plant at Metsä Group's pulp mill site in Äänekoski operates majorly with fossil free energy (scope 1 and scope 2).

Its production technology is highly resource-efficient, with process chemicals, water, and trim waste circulating within the system. The entire process, from wet pulp to the end-product, is seamlessly integrated into a single production line, eliminating the need for any additional converting steps.

  • Logistics efficiency

Due to comprehensive product design and structure, we can create lightweight, stackable products that improves logistics efficiency. These well-designed, fit-for-purpose packaging solutions help reduce environmental impact across the value chain.

  • Use

Muoto™ is made for purpose. Our wood-based products can replace fossil-based or sugarcane-based packaging alternatives in selective applications, ensuring pure and safe products for food contact.

  • Recycling

Muoto™ products are easily recyclable in standard paper and paperboard waste streams, with a best-in-class recyclability score of 98. It’s important to consider the availability of local infrastructure for collecting and processing these materials. Additionally, Muoto products have been tested and proven to be biodegradable under industrial composting conditions according to ISO 14855.
