Shaped for Purpose
The word Muoto means “shape” in Finnish, embodying the core philosophy of our brand. At Muoto, shape goes beyond the physical concept – it is a reflection of our purpose, adaptability and innovation.
At Muoto, every product begins in the sustainably managed Nordic forests, where pine and spruce grow slowly and purposefully. From these trees, we extract pure, renewable wood fibres and transform them into functional 3D forms using innovative pulp-forming technology. What starts as nature’s raw material becomes Muoto: a meaningful, purposeful shape ready to serve.

The people behind the shape—Muoto team 2025.

Our Story
Muoto was born from Metsä Group’s desire to revolutionize packaging through sustainable innovation. In 2020, Metsä Spring began developing a new kind of 3D fibre-based packaging made from renewable Nordic wood fibres. After successful lab trials, a demo plant was launched in 2022 at Metsä Group’s Äänekoski bioproduct mill in Finland, in collaboration with Valmet. This milestone allowed Muoto to refine its production process and begin limited pre-commercial deliveries in 2024, marking the transition from concept to real-world solution on a path toward full-scale manufacturing.
Our values are grounded in Metsä Group’s core principles and shape everything we do at Muoto.

“For us, better packaging is about the full solution — how it performs, where it comes from, and how it impacts the future.”
—Jarkko Tuominen, Vice President of Projects at Metsä Spring

Muoto 3D Fibre project is supported by European Union Innovation Fund
The 3D Fibre project focuses on setting up the first commercial factory for producing Muoto packaging products in Rauma, Finland.

Innovation Fund
The Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest programs supporting net-zero and breakthrough climate technologies. As the EU’s flagship climate fund, it aims to decarbonize industry, boost competitiveness, and advance the European Green Deal.
It supports pioneering projects in low-carbon tech, CCU/CCS, renewable energy, and energy storage—focusing on first-of-a-kind solutions with high impact. Managed by CINEA, the fund helps share risk and accelerate Europe’s clean energy leadership. Read more
Project Summary
“Functional, safe and sustainable 3D wood-fibre based packaging innovation to replace plastics in food and food service packaging” is a pioneering initiative that introduces a next-generation packaging solution to replace fossil-based plastics, particularly in the food industry. The project will establish a first-of-its-kind production plant in Rauma, Finland, supported by up to €86.5 million from the EU Innovation Fund.
Using advanced 3D Fibre technology, the plant will produce over 1 billion recyclable, lightweight, and rigid packaging units annually, powered entirely by renewable energy. The process conserves raw materials, energy, and water, while enabling flexible, modular production and highly adaptable design. The products are suitable for various food types and match or exceed the performance of plastic alternatives.
Over its first decade, the project is expected to avoid 4.2 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions, directly contributing to the EU’s climate neutrality and circular economy goals. It will also enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy in sustainable packaging and reduce reliance on imported crude oil. The initiative is set to create around 1,000 jobs during construction, including 200 direct and 200 indirect positions.
