Scaling up Muoto

Muoto® was born from Metsä Group’s desire to revolutionise packaging through responsible innovation.

In 2020, Metsä began developing a new kind of 3D fibre-based packaging made from renewable Nordic wood fibres. A demo plant was launched in 2022 at Metsä Group’s Äänekoski bioproduct mill in Finland, in collaboration with Valmet.

Marking the next phase in Muoto's growth, the €25 million investment represents a significant step towards scaling fibre-based food packaging solutions. The investment includes a new production line and related technologies at the existing Muoto demo plant in Äänekoski, Finland, with operations scheduled to begin in 2028.

The new production line will significantly expand production capacity. Once operational, it will have a nominal capacity of more than 100 million sustainable packaging products annually, supporting the growing demand for renewable and recyclable food packaging solutions.

The expansion represents an important step in scaling Muoto’s innovative manufacturing technology and increasing the market availability of high-quality fibre-based packaging products.
